FileZilla - Open Source FTP Client

FileZilla Client is a free File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client that allows uploading of files / websites stored on a user's computer to a hosting account (server). After uploading to the website, it will be visible via a browser to the domain address.

FileZilla or also known as FileZilla Client, is a free, open source, cross-platform FTP software. Binaries are available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. This software supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS (FTP over SSL / TLS). Since March 5, 2009, this software is the fifth most downloaded software of all time from SourceForge.net.

FileZilla Server is another product from FileZilla Client. This is a supported FTP server by the same project and features support for FTP and FTP over SSL / TLS.

The main features of Filezilla are:

  • Site manager Allows the user to list FTP sites and their connection data, such as the port number to use, the protocol to use, and whether to use anonymous or normal logs. For normal logs, the username and password will be saved. Password storage is optional.
  • Message log Displayed at the top of the window. This feature displays console-type output showing the commands sent by FileZilla and the responses received from the server.
  • File and folder view Displayed below the log messages (Message log), providing a graphical interface for FTP. Users can navigate folders and view and change their contents on local computers and servers using an Explorer-style interface. Users can drag and drop files between the local computer and the server.
  • Transfer queue Displayed along the bottom of the window, showing the real-time status of each queue or active file transfer.
